Manual or Electric Toothbrush

By | Mar 31, 2009

Like many of you, since childhood I have used a manual toothbrush. I saw my family use manual toothbrushes so you go with what you know. Manual toothbrushes alone come in many shapes and sizes. So when you decide on which toothbrush you are comfortable with, they then introduce electric toothbrushes.

Now you still have the dilemma of which electric toothbrush to use for there are many of them available. But the biggest problem you will face is whether to stick with your trusted manual, which has worked for you for years or switch to an electric toothbrush one.

Some people switch for the wrong reasons, even after all the commercials showing you how the electric toothbrush can do this, and achieve that. Some merely switch because it’s another job you can get done quicker with little effort from yourself.

However is electric the way to go or should we stick with our manual. Well after watching a programme called “10 years younger” presented by Myleene Klass on channel 4, I switched, and if you watch the same programme you would switch without thinking too.

On this programme, they devised a demonstration and the results were amazing. The dentist lady went into a shopping centre and asked 5 passers by if they had brushed there teeth this morning.  Of course they all replied yes, I mean would you say no on national TV.

Anyway what she did was this; she coated the volunteer’s teeth with this blue dentist dye using a cotton bud. She then asked them to rinse out their mouth. This blue dye showed that the darker the dye, the more build up of plaque there was on their teeth. The volunteers looked in the mirror with disgust.

I totally understood, you have brushed your teeth and then you find out that the brushing has not done anything for your teeth apart from letting you think your teeth are properly clean. The plaque on these volunteer’s teeth were bad. The dentist lady then got out an electric toothbrush and used it on the dark blue plaqued teeth. The camera zoomed in and you could actually see the toothbrush removing the plaque from their teeth. She then asked the volunteers if they would consider changing there manual toothbrush for an electric one and they are replied yes.

I think we should all be able to buy that blue dentist dye, so in the morning you would brush your teeth, and then you would use the dye to confirm that your teeth were really clean and plaque free. Anyway I switched to an electric toothbrush straightway. She also advises that you take at least 2 minutes to clean your teeth and clean them twice a day.

So there you have it. Manual or electric you decide.

Happy brushing!
